Cumbria has many gardens open to the public and there are good nurseries throughout the area. Beetham Village not only has the Wheatsheaf Pub and Beetham Garden Centre – but also the Heron Theatre and the Heron Corn Mill, on a site where corn was first ground in 1220. Beetham Nurseries has a large selection of plants, trees and shrubs. It also has restaurant and new for 2011, a farm shop. The whole area is rich in wildlife and important for butterflies (High Brown Fritillary and Scotch Argus). The RSPB reserve at Leighton Moss is a few miles away where the rare Bittern frequents the reedbeds along with a great variety of other birds. Morecambe Bay and the Kent Estuary designated AONB and a visit to this unspoilt region will not disappoint.
